About This Project
American Outpost is a peer resource hub - not a law firm, not a tax advisory, not a media company. Just one American abroad, building something they wish had existed from day one.
"When I started dealing with prenuptial agreements, FBAR filings, and domicile questions all at the same time, I kept finding the same thing: scattered forum posts, outdated blog articles, and $400-per-hour attorneys. There was no single, trustworthy, peer-built resource. So I started building one."
- Founder, American Outpost
The Origin
Roughly 9 million Americans live outside the United States. We're a financially complex group - subject to US tax obligations no matter where we live, often navigating legal systems in two or more countries simultaneously, and frequently cut off from the financial services we relied on at home.
The information is out there, but it's buried: in Reddit threads, in law firm FAQs that are deliberately vague, in IRS publications that require a CPA to interpret. There's no trusted, curated, peer-built hub where expats can find reliable overviews and connect with people who've been through the same situation.
American Outpost is an attempt to build that. It's a work in progress, starting with the topics that come up most often and are hardest to navigate alone.
Browse ResourcesWhat We Stand For
Everything here is experience and research, not professional advice. We say that upfront, every time. The goal is to help you ask better questions - not to replace a qualified professional.
We'd rather publish one well-researched resource than ten half-accurate ones. When information is uncertain or contested, we say so. When laws change, we update. We don't publish to fill space.
American Outpost is for Americans regardless of where abroad they live - whether that's Germany, Thailand, Mexico, or anywhere else. The US-side obligations are the common thread; we focus there.
This site has no financial relationship with any of the specialists it may list or recommend. The directory exists to help expats find professionals - not to generate referral revenue for the site.
If you've navigated a cross-border situation and want to share what you learned, this is a good place to do it. We'd rather this be a community resource than a solo project.
Being American abroad is not a political identity - it's a practical situation. American Outpost has no political affiliation and takes no positions on political matters. We're here for the paperwork.
Not a law firm. Nothing here is legal advice, and no attorney-client relationship is formed by reading this site.
Not a tax advisory. Tax rules change frequently and vary by situation. Always verify with a qualified CPA or tax attorney.
Not a media company. There are no advertisers, no sponsored content, and no native ads dressed up as editorial.
Not comprehensive. We cover what we know. There are gaps, and we acknowledge them openly rather than filling them with generic content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. All resources, blog posts, and forum content are free. There may be optional paid services in the future (like a premium directory tier), but the core content will always be free.
Currently, the founder writes everything. The goal is to open contributions to other qualified expats over time. All content is reviewed for accuracy before publishing, and the disclaimer is always present.
Absolutely. Use the contact form or post in the forum (when it launches). The best topics are the ones that come up repeatedly in expat communities - the questions that are hard to Google clearly.
The directory is launching soon. It will list attorneys, CPAs, bankers, and other professionals who specifically work with Americans abroad. You can join the waitlist now on the directory page.
Use the waitlist form on the directory page and select your specialty. We're building the directory now and will reach out to everyone on the list when it's ready.
If you've navigated a cross-border legal, tax, banking, or family situation as an American abroad and want to share what you learned, we'd love to talk. Contributions are credited, and the bar is experience - not a credential.
